Employment Law Attorney Toni Jaramilla Dialogues With California Supreme Court Chief Justice
Los Angeles, CA (October 2015) – Toni Jaramilla, a Los Angeles workers’ rights attorney, recently interviewed the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who is only the second woman to serve as the state’s Chief Justice.
“At the September 25th California Employment Lawyers Association (CELA) annual conference in Oakland, I, along with CELA Chair Bernard Alexander, had the honor of interviewing the Chief Justice and engaging in a thought-provoking dialogue with her,” said Jaramilla, a past chair and current board member of CELA. “Cantil-Sakauye, who holds the highest position of our highest court in California and is the first Filipina-American Chief Justice, was the keynote speaker.”
Topics discussed included access to justice, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Delano grape strikes, which coincided with the event. “Fifty years ago, Filipino farm workers led by Larry Itliong inspired the movement by agricultural workers to fight for better wages and fair treatment,” remarked labor attorney Jaramilla. The trio also discussed how thereafter Mexican farmworkers, led by Cesar Chavez, united with the Filipinos, of which Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye remarked, “The Filipinos stood up by sitting down,” referencing how the grape strikes, where Filipinos stood up for their rights, started a revolution and the United Farm Workers Union.
Both the Chief Justice and Jaramilla come from a family of farmworkers. “The struggles of workers, including my father, have inspired me to commit myself to helping the working class and oppressed people,” said Jaramilla.
“We also discussed cultural and gender diversity in the legal profession and on the bench,” said Jaramilla. The Chief Justice commended CELA’s diversity outreach programs and concurred on the importance of having diverse points of views and being able to identify with clients from diverse backgrounds. “Interviewing the Chief Justice was a high point of my legal career.”
