Hotels to add security devices, training to prevent harassment

Sexual harassment is something that no one should have to go through at work, whether you're working in an office, on location as a consultant or even as a dancer. There is no time when harassment is acceptable in a workplace.

That's why it's important for employers to take steps to protect workers against sexual harassment. One good piece of news is that over 5,000 hotels and resorts in America are doing just that.

According to the news from Oct. 7, the hotels and resorts began to offer training and security devices to their employees. The hotel trade group announced that this would be the first step in protecting workers and that an additional 15,000 properties would offer similar devices by 2020.

Leaders of unions that have taken a stand while representing hotel workers have said that the announcement is a step forward, but they wonder if the hotels will install electronic panic buttons or just use loud devices. With devices that sound an alarm, they fear that help won't be guaranteed.

The problem of sexual harassment among hotel workers came to light in California after a dishwasher working at Terranea Resort claimed that she was fired for reporting sexual harassment by her supervisor. She sued and settled the lawsuit against her temp agency for $250,000, but the hotel did not end up paying her anything.

While the settlement is good news, it doesn't mean that sexual harassment won't happen. If you're affected by harassment, make sure you reach out to your attorney and the appropriate authorities for help with your case.
