Harassment in the workplace: Document everything

Despite the fact that Title VII is a federal law that prohibits discrimination, many women in the workplace still struggle with sexual harassment. If you are someone who deals with harassment on the job, know that there are steps you can take to report this treatment and get help.

To start with, you'll need to start documenting any harassment you face. Some of the things you will need to document include:

  • Your experience including the time, date and any witnesses who were present
  • Your productivity so that you can show that you are working and safeguarding that work
  • Your experience reporting the incident with the harasser. You will need to report the time, date, location and witnesses who saw you report the incident

This kind of documentation is important because it creates a paper trail. You need this trail to show that you took the right steps to report and fight harassment in the workplace.

Some other important documents you should keep include:

  • Emails or text messages from the harasser to you
  • Copies of witness statements or responses via digital devices
  • Any additional reports you've made to human resources or other department heads

What should you do if you're still being harassed despite reporting the incidents in the past?

If you are still struggling, take your documents to your attorney. Your attorney will begin putting together a case and help you file a lawsuit against your employer for unfair treatment and harassment in the workplace. If you are being discriminated against, it is your employer's responsibility to support you and end that discrimination.
