How do employers cheat employees out of hourly wages?

When you're working a job, the expectation is that you will be paid for your time and effort. You likely signed a contract that stated how much you'd be paid and how often you'd receive it, too.

The problem isn't usually with the contract. Instead, problems arise when an employer tries to manipulate their employees to get them to work more without paying. Every wage worker should know how to spot deception when it comes to payment of hours worked.

How can an employer manipulate employees into working more for less pay?

One way is through telling you that they'll clock you in or out. Your time at work might start at 5:00 p.m., for example, and you show up at 4:45 p.m. They may ask you to start working, and they'll go clock you in manually. At that point, they may sign you in at the 5:00 p.m. start time you agreed to, even though you're actually working 15 minutes longer. If this is done every day, it adds up to many hours of work that you're not being paid to do.

What can you do if you think your employer is manipulating your hours?

It's a good idea to keep track of your hours manually, so that you can compare them to what you're paid. When there are discrepancies, speak up. Show the hours you have and ask to see the time chart the company has. It will be much more difficult for an employer to take advantage of someone who is always watching out for their best interests and tracking their time on the job.

If an employer is caught cheating you out of pay, then you can consider taking legal action.
