Yes, men can be victims of sexual harassment

Although women are often the ones who others describe as being harassed on the job, anyone can be exposed to sexual harassment. Men often face harassment, too. In 2013, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) reported that 17.6% of sexual harassment charges were filed by men.

That works out to nearly one in five cases of sexual harassment involving men based on those statistics. The true number may be even higher.

What are the three sexual harassment categories?

The three categories include sexual coercion, unwanted sexual attention and gender harassment. Coercion refers to bribing or forcing workers to enter into a relationship with the harasser (the relationship is sexual in nature). Unwanted attention refers to unwanted sexual advanced including touching or pressuring others to go on dates. Gender harassment, the third category, refers to hostile behaviors that are aimed at a worker due to their gender.

In every case, the harassment is unwarranted and unwelcome. Although men face this harassment regularly, they are less likely to speak out. Harassment doesn't have to happen in your workplace, though. If you are a victim, then you should speak out and reach out for help from those in power or those with authority outside your employer's company.

No one deserves to put up with a hostile work environment. If you are ready to fight back, you can file a claim against those who participate in sexual harassment and affect your work. Our site has more on what to do if you're a victim of sexual harassment, no matter if you are a man or woman.
