How do you approach a situation involving discrimination?

No one wants to feel as if they're less than someone else simply because of their religion, gender or skin color. No one wants to think that their disability is impacting the way people view them or making it so they're not even considered for jobs.

Unfortunately, there are cases of discrimination that hurt people in these ways. Employment discrimination is illegal, but it doesn't stop people from participating in these unlawful acts.

How should you handle a discrimination case?

If you believe that you have been or are being discriminated against, the first step is to make it known to your employer. Your employer may not know that a supervisor, colleague or even clients are discriminating against you, but if they do, they may be able to help.

Your employer is required to comply with federal anti-discrimination laws, but it's rare for them to admit that discrimination took place at work. If they don't take your concerns seriously, then you can let your employer know that you'll be taking the matter further. You can report the incident to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) if your employer is not taking steps to correct the issues you're facing.

In the meantime, you need to keep notes on everything that happens, so you have a case when the time comes. Take down names, things people have said and actions that may be discriminatory. Give a copy to your attorney, so they know what has happened and how to present your case in the best way when seeking a settlement or going to trial.
